Why speed costs you work
People on phones, on patchy signal, mid-task, comparing three businesses at once, do not wait. A slow first paint reads as a broken site, and the visitor backs out to the results page and clicks the next listing. That loss is invisible in your inbox, which is why it goes unaddressed for years.
Search engines do factor speed in, but the direct ranking effect is modest. The behavioral effect — people leaving — is the expensive part.
