AI Search & AEO

AEO: Getting Found When The Answer Comes First.

People increasingly ask an assistant instead of scanning ten blue links. If your site can't be read, understood and cited, you're invisible in that conversation.

An AI answer card citing website sources beside a search result and a website page

Answer Engine Optimization — AEO — is the work of making your business easy for AI systems to quote. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews all assemble answers from sources they can parse and trust. Being one of those sources is the new version of ranking.

It isn't a replacement for SEO and it isn't a separate trick. The same foundations matter — clear structure, specific pages, accurate business data, real expertise — they just have to be expressed in a way a machine can lift cleanly.

What AEO Work Actually Involves

  • Answer-first writing: the direct answer near the top, detail underneath
  • One page per real question or service, not a catch-all page
  • Structured data — Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, Article, Breadcrumb
  • Consistent, accurate business facts across your site and profiles
  • Clean headings and short, quotable paragraphs an assistant can extract
  • Crawlable pages that don't hide content behind scripts or interactions
  • Genuine expertise, named people and verifiable detail rather than filler
  • Entity clarity: who you are, what you do, and where you do it, unambiguously

Why This Is Suddenly Urgent

AI answers reduce the number of clicks a search produces. When someone asks for the best roofer in their area, the assistant often returns two or three named businesses with a short summary. Being one of those names is worth more than position four in a list nobody scrolls to.

The businesses getting cited aren't the ones with the most content. They're the ones whose content is specific, structured and easy to verify — plus the ones with consistent listings and real reviews, because assistants lean on the same signals local search does.

There's no submission form and no paid placement. It's earned by being the clearest source on the question.

Honest Limits

  • Nobody can guarantee a citation in an AI answer — the models change constantly
  • There's no dashboard that reports AI visibility with real precision yet
  • AEO won't rescue a site with thin or inaccurate content
  • Traditional SEO still drives the majority of measurable traffic today
  • Anyone selling "AI ranking guarantees" is selling something that doesn't exist

Questions

Straight Answers.

What's the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO aims to rank a page in a list of results. AEO aims to make your content the source an assistant quotes when it answers directly. They overlap heavily — good structure serves both — but AEO puts more weight on answer-first writing, schema and factual clarity.

Do I need AEO if my local SEO is already working?

Increasingly, yes. AI Overviews and assistants already sit above local results for many queries. Keeping the same visibility means being present in both places.

Can you measure AI visibility?

Partially. We can track brand mentions, referral traffic from AI tools where it's identifiable, and whether your pages are structured to be quotable. We won't pretend the measurement is as clean as rank tracking.

Is this an extra service or part of the build?

The foundations — schema, structure, answer-first content, clean crawlability — are part of how we build every site. Ongoing AEO content work can be added alongside an SEO engagement.
