What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)?

AEO is the work of making your business easy for AI assistants to understand, trust and quote. Here is what it actually involves — and what it can't promise.

The short answer

AEO — Answer Engine Optimization — is optimizing your content so answer engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews) can extract a correct, quotable answer about your business and cite you as the source.

Traditional SEO competes for a position in a list. AEO competes to be the sentence the assistant says out loud. Both matter, and the underlying work overlaps a great deal.

Why it started mattering so quickly

A growing share of searches now end with a generated answer rather than a click. When someone asks an assistant which plumber to call in their town, they often get two or three names and a short summary. Position four in a list nobody scrolls to is worth far less than being one of those names.

The businesses being cited tend not to be the ones with the most content. They're the ones whose content is specific, structured, factually consistent and easy to verify.

What the work looks like in practice

None of this is exotic. It's disciplined execution of things most sites do loosely:

  • Answer-first structure: the direct answer in the first paragraph, supporting detail below it.
  • One page per real question or service, so each page has a single unambiguous topic.
  • Structured data — Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, Article and Breadcrumb schema.
  • Business facts (name, address, phone, hours, service area, services) identical everywhere they appear.
  • Short, self-contained paragraphs that make sense when lifted out of the page.
  • Named people, real credentials, real photos and verifiable specifics instead of generic filler.
  • Content that renders in HTML rather than appearing only after a click or a script.

How AEO and SEO fit together

There is no version of AEO that works on a site with weak SEO foundations. Crawlability, speed, clean headings, internal links and topical focus feed both. If anything, AEO rewards the fundamentals more strictly, because a machine that can't parse your page simply skips it.

The practical difference is emphasis. For AEO we write more definitionally, answer questions explicitly, and lean harder on schema and factual consistency.

What nobody can promise you

No agency can guarantee a citation in an AI answer. The models change without notice, they weight sources differently, and there is no submission process or paid placement. Measurement is also immature — you can track brand mentions and identifiable AI referral traffic, but not with rank-tracking precision.

Treat anyone selling "guaranteed AI rankings" the same way you'd treat guaranteed Google rankings: as a sales tactic rather than a capability.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. It's an additional surface. Traditional search still drives most measurable traffic for most businesses; AEO protects visibility as answers move above the results.

Do small local businesses need AEO?

Local businesses arguably benefit fastest, because assistants lean on the same local signals — accurate listings, reviews, specific service and location content — that local SEO already builds.

How long does AEO take to show up?

AI systems refresh on their own schedules. Structural and schema work can be reflected within weeks; content authority builds over months, like SEO.
